What is a CAC?
The Midcoast CAC is an organization that brings "the systems" to families and helps investigations be as child- and family-friendly as possible. We use evidence-based best practices, which means that the way we interview children and help families is based on research, years of experience, and support from experts and other organizations like ours.
We help families work through the aftermath of sexual abuse. We do this through good working relationships and agreements from many different groups that must be part of responding to child sexual abuse. This includes local and statewide law enforcement, prosecution, Maine Department of Health & Human Services Child Protective Services, mental & medical health providers, victim advocates, and others.
Getting a child to the CAC
Law enforcement, Child Protective Services, and the District Attorney’s Office are the only ones who can make referrals to the CAC. Parents, caregivers, or other professionals cannot make referrals to the CAC. Instead, they should make a mandated report to the Department of Health and Human Services Child Abuse Hotline or their local law enforcement.
Our partnerships are what keeps our CAC going and what helps us serve children and families the best way we can. Below is the list of agencies we proudly call our partners.
